What we can do to reduce stormwater pollution

Marine Sciences on the harbour

Marine Sciences on the harbour

Federal, State and local governments all play a role in reducing stormwater pollution. They have done a lot of research to find out where the problems are coming from. They enforce regulations on factories, mining operations, building and construction sites and many farming activities. It is difficult to enforce regulations on home building sites. Governments set up sewerage systems to treat our grey and black water from our homes. They have regulations and have set up disposal facilities to accept different types of waste.

These are some of the new things governments are doing to reduce the pollution going into the waterways and the sea.

  • Litter traps
  • Stormwater ponds
  • Beach cleaning
  • Education
  • Household chemical pick-ups
