Marine Pollution Prevention Regulations

To prevent pollution of the sea, ship owners and ship crews must comply with marine pollution prevention regulations.

There are Australian Commonwealth and State government/ Northern Territory regulations aimed at ships, fishing vessels and recreational craft.

These regulations mirror (are like) those agreed by all countries at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Because ships travel all over the world visiting many countries there has to be one set of regulations for all ships. If every country had its own regulations it would be impossible for every ship visiting a port to know what the regulations were. They would find it hard to comply with them all.

The Commonwealth government agency responsible for the regulations is the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. To find out more visit
