Torres Strait is the stretch of Water between Cape York in Queensland and the southern tip of Papua New Guinea. In the Strait are dozens of islands and gorgeous coral reefs. To protect this remarkable marine environment all shipping is carefully managed.
Last year 1491 ships made 3727 voyages through Torres Strait. Most travel from SE Asia to the east coast of Australia.
To make sure that shipping travels safely through the Strait, all ships over 70m long must have a local pilot on board. The local pilot helps the ship's captain safely navigate through the Strait.
