A quick turnaround

Ports need to be able to work quickly to unload and load ships and keep track of all the containers. Ships want to get in and out of port as quickly as possible. Businesses want to move their goods quickly as well. Train and truck drivers want to deliver and pick up containers as quickly as possible.

A lot of organisation is needed to make sure that no one part of the transport system slows down the movement of goods.

The Port of Melbourne is Australia's busiest container port. About 3.3 million containers move in and out of the port each year.
