The Western Australian coral reefs have escaped land-based pollution compared to Queensland. With a low population and no intensive agriculture in this WA region, there is less has harmful material washing off the land. Up until this summer, coral bleaching on the WA reefs were not highly significant. A sustain period of very warm oceans has caused bleaching on most of the reefs.
Tour boat operators, who currently have no tourists and no work, have been helping to survey the spread of coral bleaching. Reefs have between 10% and 30% bleaching but some were as high as 60%.
It’s a great shock that these once pristine reefs are being threatened.
