I had a fabulous time visiting the HELMEPA office in my recent visit to Athens in October. AUSMEPA are working with HELMEPA in order to expand the cooperation between the two associations, within the spirit of the MEPA philosophy.
I had the opportunity to see first-hand HELMEPA’s and participate in activities such as the voluntary beach cleanup of the Vravrona wetland and the educational visits of students and their teachers at both the environmental Exhibition in Piraeus and the one in Palaio Faliro. I talked to the students about the Great Barrier Reef and the importance of a healthy marine environment for Australia and in Greece. Students loved the Australian flags I handed out and were full of questions on what students in Australia do, to help with a clean marine environment.
HELMEPA’s Director General and Secretariat staff had the chance to learn more about AUSMEPA’s recent activities and our Maritime Emissions Portal and its cooperation with ports to measure ships’ emissions. My visit was a valuable opportunity for both MEPAs not only to exchange information on current projects but also to discuss ways for closer cooperation, especially in the field of environmental education and awareness, despite the distances separating the two countries.
