Thunder Drum

Another homemade instrument you can make for developing a storm soundscape is called a Thunder Drum.

The crashing waves and rain tell part of the story of how the ocean and it's weather changes the coastline. However, the best storms will have lightning accompanied by the thunder it produces.

You will need:

An open-ended cylinder either a large soup can with both ends off or a leftover of piece PVC pipe

SAFETY NOTE: the edges of cans can be sharp so take special care not to put your fingers on the cut edge

  • Marking pen
  • Sissors
  • Steel spring (stretched out a bit) - an old used one if possible
  • Glue and strong tape
  • Sharp pin
  • Mylar or old Xray sheet
  • A small plate that is larger than the diameter of the cylinder you have chosen
