AUSMEPA eNewsletter Autumn 2016

It is with great excitement and pride, to let you know that AUSMEPA, in partnership with Rightship, have just been announced as one of the top 10 finalists for the 2016 Google Impact Challenge.  We believe our project is a game changer and we need your vote!

No more 'too hard basket'. We will work together for solutions by creating a tool, an Emissions Portal, so that everyone can see and begin to understand the impact of emissions in our ports, cities and in the sea. This will assist decision makers and provide a transparent educational tool.

Queensland Teachers Resource Expo (QUEDREX) 2016

QUEDREX is an annual event where teachers of all levels come to find out what teaching resources are available. AUSMEPA has had a display stand for the last 8 years.

This year teachers with a flair for the arts were pretty excited to investigate the display featuring our latest Arts N Craft ideas. It proved to be massive hit! So many photos were taken and promises made to send us some of their completed projects. We are looking forward to seeing what comes in so we can share these with you.

There are other Education Expos in different states, tell us where would you like to see us.

NATIONAL SEAWEEK; 3-11 September 2016

Seaweek is an annual themed "Celebration of the sea" across Australia. Many schools, individuals and organisations provide activities for students and the public to promote awareness of our incredible marine environment.

Hosted for many years by the Marine Education Society of Australasia (MESA) the event is now hosted by Australian Association of Environmental Educators (AAEE) Marine Group. This year you can find out what is on offer at their Facebook page here.

AUSMEPA has provided a 'Waste in the Foodweb' activity using a prepared bas-relief underwater cave made from all waste materials as a basis for an activity for students. (You might have noticed it on display in the last item!)

Australian Pensioners and Superannuants League (APSL)Australian Pensioners and Superannuants League (APSL)
During July AUSMEPA Education Officer, Jody Plecas, gave a presentation to the APSL group on AUSMEPA's role to influence marine environmental education awareness and action.

The active seniors group were fascinated to learn about the sea territory under Australia's stewardship and how everyone can make a difference in keeping the oceans healthy.

In schools this relates to understanding about pollution from the land travelling to the ocean by wind and water and the impact it has on ocean systems. On the sea AUSEMPA provides information and refresher training materials for seafarers on their responsibilities for safety and environment in Australian waters.

The group was so appreciative they immediately voted to make a donation of $200 to AUSMEPA's continuing efforts. Thanks so very much APSL. We are honoured by your gesture.

AUSMEPA is a not-for-profit supported by leading maritime companies, individuals and organisations. Funds raised are used to create no-cost, innovative and practical educational resources for schools, seafarers and other users of the marine environment. click here to read more
