Stormwater pollution

Rainwater must be drained into waterways to prevent our roads and homes from being flooded. When rainwater does flow into drains, it carries with it anything that is lying around especially in gutters. Most of these items will pollute waterways including the sea.

The kinds of pollution that is carried by stormwater drains into rivers and out to sea are:

  • Fertiliser and garden chemicals
  • Leaves and grass clippings
  • Oil from the road
  • Litter
  • Dissolved doggy do
  • Detergents from washing cars
  • Paint from washed paint brushes
  • Chemicals people put down drains
