Commercial ship and boat owner actions

In Australia ships, boats and other marine equipment are not allowed to clean the hulls in the sea. If they did, marine pests would escape. They must becleaned out of the water where the material removed from the hull can be collected and disposed safely on land

All commercial vessels must:

  • Comply with the Australian Ballast Water Management Requirements. In the future all fishing vessels will need to manage their ballast water to the same standards as international ships.
  • Keep the buildup of biofouling to a minimum by cleaning the hull and applying antifouling paint at regular intervals.
