Recreational boat owner actions

Actions to prevent marine pests spreading will also maintain and increase the life of boats.

When a boat is taken out of the sea:

  • Remove any entangled seaweeds or animals on the boat or trailer when it is removed from the water. Place the material into a rubbish bin
  • Drain all water from the boat, trailer and engine
  • If possible, rinse the boat with freshwater and allow to dry out and allow 48 hours before it is moved to a new location in the sea.

While the boat is out of the water:

  • Clean away any build up of biofouling
  • Keep the antifouling paint up to date
  • Clean the boat’s gear between trips
  • Flush out areas in the boat that collect seawater.
