Lubricating oil is needed in car engines and other car parts like the gearbox. The oil makes the surface between rubbing metal parts smooth and prevents the metal from wearing out. The engines and gearboxes have seals to keep the oil in. When some cars and trucks get older the seals can leak and some oil escapes. It gets splashed around the engine and drips onto the road.

You can find oil stains on the asphalt in car parks and on our streets. This oil will eventually get washed down the stormwater drain and into a river or the sea.

Have you noticed oil stains in car parks and in the street?
