The 95 metre fishing trawler the Geelong Star has only gone out fishing once in Australian waters. It managed to kill 4 dolphins and 2 seals which were caught in its nets. Obviously the mammal excluders on the nets didn't do its job.
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), who had an observer on board, has added more controls on the ship's fishing operation.
The Geelong Star is licensed to catch 16,500 tonnes of deep sea fish each year. It is able to freeze the catch on board.
