Zoo operation to remove fish hooks a success

Our news reporter was on hand when a rescued black swan was well enough to be released back into its home.

Lost fishing hooks, fishing line along with any litter can harm birds and other wildlife.

A sick black swan was seen at Sanctuary Lakes with fishing line hanging out of its bill. After a major effort to catch the swan it was taken to the zoo for examination. The zoo vet operated on this swan to remove three fish hooks and a bundle of fishing line.

The vet didn't think the swan would survive after its operation. Once it was well a very happy swan was released back into its home. It only took a few minutes for the swan to find its mate.

Swans have very powerful wings they will use for defence. If you find a sick or injured swan, contact an animal rescue service who knows how to safely catch these strong birds.
