Government to ban dumping dredging spoil around the reef

Channels need to be dredged so ships can travel safely into ports. In the Great Barrier Reef it is even more important to prevent all shipping accidents. When a shipping channel is being dredged, the sand and mud collected is called spoil. This spoil needs to be dumped.

The Federal Government plans to ban any spoil being dumped inside the extensive Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The spoil will have to be shipped and stored on land where it can’t damage the Great Barrier Reef.
