Ports bring direct and indirect employment

A lot of different people are needed to operate a port. Ports operate every day of the week. Many types of work are also carried out at night.

•  Some of the people who work in ports require degrees or other qualifications.

•  Other workers do not need such a high level of education but do require a lot of training.

•  Some people work for businesses which operate from the port.
•  Ports provide many job opportunities for people who live near ports.

•  Some, like Customs officers, work for the government.

•  While a lot of the trucks are owned by big transport companies, many of the truck drivers own their truck and work for themselves.

•  Many businesses exporting and importing goods have their offices and warehouses near the port.
