'Pollution Kills' Campaign by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
Friday, 22 August 2008
As part of its ongoing campaign to raise awareness of marine environmental issues, AMSA's Environment Protection section has produced two new posters with the theme "Pollution Kills", using graphic images of wildlife impacted by pollution. While the wording on both versions of the poster is the same, the images highlight the two most common types of marine pollution incidents reported to AMSA - oil and garbage. The posters include a telephone number for reporting pollution and an email address to request further information.
Copies of the posters can be obtained from Katrina Hansen, email address : email@example.com.
The posters form part of ASMA's ongoing educational program providing educational resources for schools.
An educational resource kit on the prevention of and response to pollution from ships, "Protect our Seas" is available and also includes a DVD "Managing the Risk" with information on the National Plan to Combat Pollution of the Sea by Oil and Other Noxious and Hazardous Substances.
A National Plan Brochure to complement the video "Managing the Risk" is also available together with a Protecting Our Seas Brochure, providing general information on the legislation and international conventions implemented in Australia to protect the marine environment from ship-sourced pollution and where to report violations.
A Stow It Don't Throw It Brochure with information on the laws relating to garbage disposal from small vessels is also available.
AMSA has also developed projects to assist teachers including Mathematical calculations, scientific experiment and the legal jurisdiction task.
Other educational material about the marine environment to be found on the AMSA website www.amsa.gov.au includes games for primary school students, classroom projects for teachers and pollution fact sheets.
All of which can be distributed for community education purposes without infringing copyright.
