Mr. Michael Julian, Executive Director of the Australian Marine Environment Protection Association (AUSMEPA), said today at a presentation ceremony at Lagoon Pier, Port Melbourne, he was honoured to present the Australian Marine Environment Protection Association's Environmental Award 2009 to Tim Pallas MP, Minister for Roads and Ports and Major Projects.
The Board of the Australian Marine Environment Protection Association had decided to present its 2009 Environmental Award to the Government of Victoria, in recognition of the achievements of two of its agencies EPA Victoria and Melbourne Water for dramatically improving the water quality of Port Phillip and Victoria's coastal waters over a number of years.
Mr. Julian said that through a very effective combination of education, encouragement and enforcement these two agencies, as well as improving water quality, have considerably reduced land sourced marine pollution entering Port Phillip. These actions have ensured that Victoria is a world leader in minimising marine pollution.
The AUSMEPA Environmental Award recognises and promotes achievements, innovation and best practice in minimising marine pollution and protection of the marine environment. The last Environmental Award was presented to SEA SA Pty. Ltd. in recognition of the large reduction in greenhouse gasses that its ferry service in South Australia had achieved.
In presenting the Environmental Award to Tim Pallas MP, Mr. Julian outlined the role of the Australian Marine Environment Association of bringing awareness to the Australian community of the importance of Australia's precious marine environment and the need to protect it. He said this is done through an internet based education program in which free resources are provided to school teachers and all young Australians from the AUSMEPA website http://www.ausmepa.org.au/
AUSMEPA also provides education and awareness to seafarers on ships visiting Australian ports through a DVD Welcome to Australia Protecting the marine environment. The DVD can also be viewed from the AUSMEPA website.
AUSMEPA is a not for profit association which is funded by sponsorship by the shipping and port industries and related organisations as well as by individual membership fees. A list of AUSMEPA sponsors is posted on the AUSMEPA website.
Mr. Julian recalled that AUSMEPA is one of several Marine Environment Protection Associations around the world, with others in Cyprus, Greece, North America, Turkey, Ukraine and Uruguay, with others expected to be established in Malaysia and Thailand soon. Together they are part of the International Marine Environment Protection Association (INTERMEPA). All MEPAs are dedicated to promoting the importance of the marine environment and the need for its protection.
