If you have a look among the seaweed on a beach you are likely to find leaves and sticks. These often come from people’s gardens. Many people like to have tidy gardens. Some people sweep leaves and lawn clippings into the gutter and even down the side entry pit.	The side entry pit is the opening into the underground stormwater drain. The remains of rotting leaves and grass clippings pollute the seawater. You won’t see lawn clippings on the beach. They will have decomposed in the river or the sea causing pollution. When bacteria in water decomposes the grass and leaves the bacteria can use most of the oxygen in the water.
