MEP: Maritime Emissions Portal

Responsible for the carriage of 90% of the world's goods, international shipping is inextricably linked to global trade, and will continue to play a critical role in lifting global living standards for generations to come.

Given this, it is becoming increasingly important for the industry to act to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, which most commonly manifest as carbon dioxide (CO2). If shipping were compared to a nation, it would be the 6th largest emitter of global CO2 emissions. Without action, shipping emissions have been projected to increase between 50% and 250% by 2050. International shipping was, however, excluded from the COP21 'Paris Agreement' to keep global warming to less than 2% of pre-industrial levels. Whilst some progress on CO2 reduction measures has been made through the International Maritime Organisation, the industry as a whole is yet to agree on targets.

WORKING WITH INDUSTRY

In keeping with our role to assist the shipping industry in acting on issues of environmental sustainability, AUSMEPA is taking a leadership role in proactively addressing community concerns, and providing progressive solutions. With the assistance of our network of members and sponsors from the maritime industry, we aim to work collaboratively to encourage sustainable change for the long- term benefit of our marine environment. Addressing the current lack of ship emissions data, AUSMEPA are developing a Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP), which will enable ports and their stakeholders to measure the air quality and changing air patterns throughout their port environs.

THE ONLINE PORTAL

Creating greater transparency around ship-sourced emissions (CO2, SOx, NOx & PM) associated with port activities, the MEP will inform and empower all industry stakeholders, providing a unique opportunity to define priority projects aimed at reducing these emissions. This data will be utilised to produce the first interactive overview of ship emissions, providing ports with a tool to benchmark emissions of particular vessels and to generate a baseline for evaluating improvement over time. The portal dashboard will provide users with a unique insight into ship operations whilst in port, including ship particulars, speed, transit time and an estimate of ship emissions.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Initially trialling and launching within the network of Australian ports, AUSMEPA plans to scale the MEP to a global audience through our international association of Marine Environment Protection Associations (MEPAs). The outcome will be an internationally-delivered project with global impact and reach. Through satellite tracking and a big-data approach, the MEP will connect over 3,000 ports worldwide, improving knowledge of air emissions associated with shipping activities in port, measured over the course of a day, week, month or year. The MEP will rely on three main data sources:

Satellite and/or terrestrial data via Automatic Identification System (AIS) data
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Rating, accessible via www.shippingefficiency.org
Criteria Air Pollutant estimations, which are mainly associated with health impacts in and around a port environs.

CREATING PARTNERSHIPS TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS

AUSMEPA aims to work with the shipping industry to assist it become even more environmentally sustainable. The MEP achieves this with complete transparency. AUSMEPA are collaborating on the MEP with maritime industry specialists RightShip, who provide statistical insights and expertise on maritime safety and sustainability to clients worldwide. RightShip, who also power the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Rating (freely available on www.shippingefficiency.org) have data on over 76,000 vessels worldwide, and expertise in turning big data into useful information. The innovative Maritime Emissions Portal represents a significant undertaking, requiring a collaborative approach from both Australian and international ports and their stakeholders. Having commenced late in 2016, we envisage that this project will take approximately two years to develop and trial.
