Most garden sheds have containers of different chemicals and paints that will never be used. The garage or shed may also have containers of sump oil taken when changing the car’s oil. We are not allowed to pour these down the drain or place them in our rubbish bins because it is not safe. If you have chemicals at home that need to be disposed of, ask your council where this can be done. Your region may have an annual collection point for chemicals. There are also private operators who will take your chemicals for a fee.

When cleaning paintbrushes, get most of the excess paint off onto paper and place the paper in the garbage bin. Wash the brushes in a plastic ice-cream container. When finished, place the plastic container somewhere safe and allow the water to evaporate. Eventually you will have a paint coated plastic container that is safe to place in the bin.
