The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) in Canberra is responsible for implementing regulations to ensure ships visiting our ports are safe and that they do not cause pollution. The maritime safety and marine environment protection regulations implemented by AMSA are firstly agreed internationally at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), see www.imo.org. IMO is the United Nation’s technical body responsible for maritime safety and marine environment protection.
